Have you read The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) by Don Miguel Ruiz? I highly recommend it, it is a life changing book. If you have not read it yet, please read it. I’ll provide you with excerpts from the book, highlighting the four main principles.

The Four Agreements offers life changing perspectives on how we view life and interact with people on a daily basis. If you are looking to change your perspectives on life and create a meaningful life this book will lay the foundation for new beginnings. Listed below are The Four Agreements that we will discuss:

  1. Be Impeccable With Your Word
  2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
  3. Don’t Make Assumptions
  4. Always Do Your Best

Be Impeccable With Your Word

Life and death are in the power of our tongues. The beauty of that, is we can create a beautiful life and spread love! Do you enjoy gossip? Do you find yourself speaking and thinking negatively majority of the time? We have to be mindful of how we speak about ourselves and others. Especially when gossiping and getting the tea. I am a recovering gossiper. I relapse from time to time but I am learning and growing.

Don’t Take Anything Personally

Nothing other people do is because of you! Let it resonate in your soul! A lot of times people are projecting. Projection refers to unconsciously taking unwanted emotions or traits you don’t like about yourself and attributing them to someone else. Do you find yourself projecting? I used to project unaware. Now that I am aware, I pause – take a step back, remove my experiences and feelings from the situation before communicating.

Don’t Make Assumptions

This is my favorite agreement! It is so easy to make assumptions. Transparent moment – I used to live my life based on assumptions and I would want to communicate after I showed out and made false accusations. Making assumptions was a hinderance is my romantic relationship. I have been applying this agreement to my life. So far, progress has been made. I have less stress when dealing with people and their actions that I do not agree with or understand at that given moment. I no longer get upset prior to communicating about the situation.

Always Do Your Best

Do you give your best on a daily? Are there any areas you feel as you can give more in? Are you too hard on yourself when you’re tired and trying to accomplish tasks? Your best will vary, know when to go hard and know when to take it easy on yourself. Find the balance.

Your Homework!

First if you have not read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz yet, go read it! If you have read it, read it again. You will not regret it.

After reading the book, write down each agreement on flash cards with summaries or excerpts from the book that resonates with you the most.

Read those flash cards daily for the next 21 days – it takes 21 days to build a habit. Really learn the agreements and practice them in your daily life.

In the words of Don Miguel Ruiz, “Everything you have ever learned, you learned through repetition. You learned to write, to drive, even walk by repetition. You are a master of speaking your language because you practiced. Action is what makes the difference.”

  1. Okay I love this. Have to look up the book now. “Everything you have ever learned, you learned through repetition” That hits home when I think about wanting to create the life I want. The four points are definitely life changing when applied.

    1. It is true though, repetition is the key to achieving our goals. After reading the book, please let me know what’s your takeaway from each agreement.
